UTM: SSDT Hosts Talk On Effective Journalism

The School of Sustainable Development and Tourism (SSDT) at the University of Technology, Mauritius (UTM), in collaboration with the US Embassy in Mauritius, hosted a compelling talk on “Effective Journalism: Why It Matters” on July 23, 2024. The event featured Professor Susanna Wing from Haverford College, USA, who presented her research on the global state of journalism, with a particular focus on Africa.

Professor Wing highlighted the critical link between journalism and democracy, stressing the need to address the decline in democratic practices through effective journalism. The interactive Q&A session allowed students, especially those in communication programs, to engage deeply with Professor Wing and gain valuable insights into the importance of journalism in shaping informed and accountable societies.

Professor Wing, author of “Governance and Intervention in Mali: Elusive Security” (Routledge 2024) and the award-winning “Constructing Democracy in Africa: Mali in Transition” (2010), has extensively researched constitutionalism, legal reform, and the judiciary. Her work continues to shed light on the vital role of journalism in democratic governance.
