The School of Sustainable Development and Tourism had the privilege of hosting Mr. Dev Jodhun, a prominent advocate for Climate Equity from the United States, for a talk on Climate Equity on Wednesday, 20 November 2024. Through such initiatives, Mr. Jodhun aims to foster awareness and inspire action toward a more equitable future where all communities can thrive in the face of climate challenges.
Mr. Jodhun is recognized for his impactful work with the White House in the USA. His focus on inclusive and equitable climate policies addresses the disproportionate effects of climate change on marginalized communities, aligning with the U.S. government’s increasing emphasis on environmental justice. With a background in policy analysis and community organizing, Dev combines social justice and environmental sustainability, highlighting the necessity of collaboration among government entities, local communities, and grassroots organizations, including small island developing states.
During the workshop, Mr. Jodhun provided a comprehensive analysis of the impacts of climate policies on various demographic groups, stressing the need for targeted support to vulnerable populations. He strongly advocated for active community engagement in policymaking, believing that those most affected by climate change must have a voice and show leadership in shaping initiatives.
This workshop not only aroused better awareness but has also broadened the understanding of climate equity for staff and students at the University. The event underscores the university’s commitment to fostering discussions on sustainability and equity, further empowering its community to drive change in addressing climate challenges.
