Purpose of the Academic Unit

The Academic Unit which falls under the Office of the Registrar is a unit which is vested with the responsibility of handling all academic matters of the University. The Unit became operational in year 2005.

The Unit is headed by an Assistant Registrar. Other assigned staff comprise of an Administrative Officer, one Higher Executive Officer and two Management Support Officers.

The Academic Unit is responsible for processing examination results, new programmes, programme reviews, Academic Regulations, amongst other academic related matters, which require approval at the Academic Council level. The objective of the Academic Unit is to communicate academic decisions through implementation at the different School levels/Departments of the University and ensure that Academic Council implementations are in compliance with approved Academic Regulations in force.

Function of the Academic Unit

  • The Unit is responsible for the preparation of the Academic Semester Calendar for the University.
  • The Unit is in charge of all arrangements for the Convocation Ceremonies of the University.
  • The Unit is responsible for the preparation of Certificates for graduates upon conferment of their degree at the Convocation Ceremonies.
  • The Unit also verifies and certifies certificates of ex-students upon request from international institutions/organizations.
  • The department also assists other Tertiary Institutions like Tertiary Education Commission in connection with the equivalence of academic qualifications.
  • The Section provides support to MPhil/PhD students undertaking research studies at the University. The Academic Unit is responsible for organizing transfer from MPhil to PhD examinations and PhD examinations for research students.  It has the responsibility of conducting Research Degrees Committee to consider the evaluation/assessment of research proposals.
  • It provides secretarial support to the Academic Council.  It also acts as secretariat to the Research Degrees Committee, the Research Evaluation Committee, the Disciplinary Committee amongst other sub-committees.

What are the procedures for loss of Certificates?

In case of loss of the original certificate, the University may issue a copy on the following conditions: (i) The holder of the original certificate must produce a sworn affidavit confirming the loss. (ii) The copy of the original certificate issued will have “copy” marked across it. (iii) The copy of the original certificate will be issued only against payment of a fee determined by the University.

How to apply for MPhil/PhD Research Degree?

  • Identify two supervisors in the respective field of study at the University of Technology, Mauritius. One of the supervisors must be an Academic staff from the University of Technology, Mauritius.
  • Filling of the Registration Form
  • Submission of the Research Proposal
  • Follow basic compulsory training on research ethics and integrity
