The metro offers a rapid transit from main cities such as Phoenix, Quatre-Bornes, Rose-Hill/ Beau- Bassin and Port-Louis. UTM is to date the only easily accessible University via the metro with a 10 mins walk from the Coromandel station.
Foreign students following a full-time course in Mauritius are also allowed to work part-time for up to twenty hours per week as per the existing employment law. Students should be registered with a tertiary education institution in Mauritius for at least one academic year and hold a valid student visa granted by the Passport and Immigration Office.
Students can benefit from a number of off and on-campus leisure and sports facilities such as football grounds and multi-purpose gymnasium complexes free of charge or for a fee. The university campus also offers opportunities for cultural exchanges via different clubs and student societies. The Student Union is very active and engages students in different activities. International students will have to consider the cost of living – including accommodation – that varies, depending on the daily needs, lifestyle and habits and location. To note that the minimum monthly salary on the island as at July 2022 is Rs 11, 075. However, from the apartment close to the university to the villa close to the beach that provides maximum comfort, the accommodation cost can vary drastically. Bus travel is free for students holding a valid student bus pass, while taxi costs are considerable, given the rise in fuel price.
There are multiple options a resident can choose from as far as monthly grocery shopping is concerned. Depending on one’s wallet, students can choose from going to the local markets weekly rendez-vous for vegetables, fruits and meat or can also buy from the many accessible supermarket chains that offer a variety of products. As for healthcare, both public and private healthcare institutions offer adequate medical services. International students should, however, have an adequate health insurance plan covering the duration of their studies in Mauritius.
