Competitions
Some people believe that without competition, there is no progress. Indeed, ICT competitions
provide a similar experience. Competition is not necessarily with other teams. It is often with oneself and acts as a means for students to leave their comfort zone.
ICT competitions act in the same way. They provide a means for students to put into practice what they learnt at the university.
The following competitions are the ones where UTM students participate regularly:
2024: Participation of UTM at WebCup 2024 Competition
The University of Technology, Mauritius was pleased to align four teams (Beta Factor, Vertex, Shadow Squad and Galactic Guardians) at the WebCup 2024 Competition. During the 24-hour coding competition, the teams developed innovative applications which can be consulted at: https://24h.webcup.fr/sites-realises-en-24-heures/
2020 & 2022: Digicup
It requires teams to find a non-governmental organization in Mauritius, identify a problem and develop a solution over a period of about a month. It provides the opportunity of solving a real-life problem with real stakeholders. The teams are coached by experienced IT professionals during the competition. At the end, the teams present their work in front of a jury panel.
2019 & 2022: Web Cup
It is a 24-hour coding challenge organized at the national level only open to teams of students and professionals. It involves solving a variety of problems through the development of small pieces of software and getting them validated by the jury over a 24-hour period.
2021: SMAC
It is a mobile development competition organized by UTM with the support of the ICT industry. The competition lasts about 15 weeks over which they are coached on mobile technologies by experienced IT professionals. The teams have to come up with an idea of a mobile app and implement it.
2019: Krakathon
It is a 24-hour coding challenge organized at the national level only open to teams of students and professionals. It involves solving a variety of problems through the development of small pieces of software and getting them validated by the jury over a 24-hour period.
Teams from UTM have performed well in these competitions. Apart from being in the limelight, they also benefitted from coaching from experienced IT professionals, networking with ICT companies and having fun with friends from different tertiary institutions.
